Created on May 4th, 2008 by Jerry
Soon you should be noticing some new features getting added to the site, amongst them:
- Personal dive library - you will be able to select the wrecks that you dive. Done!! (May 7, 2008)
- Buoy Listings - Some people have submitted suggestions that they add buoy's to the various wrecks. I have added this feature and now I need some volunteers to make this feature a reality!! Drop me a line via the suggestion box - just make sure you're logged in or include your email (the contact tab is up top or simply email me at gskidmor@divethegreatlakes.com). Now when you do a wreck search, you will see a new column that will state whether or not a buoy is listed. Done!! (May 1, 2008)
- Photo upload - you can upload pics of the various wrecks.Done!! (July 3, 2008)
- Personal Dive Blog - nothing special, but you will be able to create a blog about anything SCUBA
New Site: www.divetheunitedstates.com
Created on April 13th, 2008 by Jerry
I've opened up a new site and invite you to take a look! The site looks similar to this one with one main difference: it covers wrecks from the entire United States as opposed to just the Great Lakes area. It has the most comprehensive listing of shipwrecks and dive shops in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Pacific Ocean as well as many others not listed. I doubt you will find any other site out there that has this much information in one convenient location. On top of that, divetheunitedstates.com is a user driven site, so you're encouraged to sign up (it's free!) and comment on the sites you've visted or add dive shops that we're missing!
About this Site

Have you ever been planning a dive trip and wanted to know what the wreck diving opportunities were at your destination as well as the closest dive shop? You can spend hours searching before you find everything you wanted to know, and it's usually spread across multiple pages.
This site contains the most exhaustive list of dive shops & charters, dive sites, and shipwrecks in the Great Lakes region - everything SCUBA! We have sites, shops, and wrecks for each one of the five lakes - Erie, Huron, Michigan, Ontario and Superior. On top of this, we have the latitude and longitude of most dive sites and diveable wrecks mapped out with the closest dive shops for your convenience!
Should you find we're missing a wreck or site you dive or a shop you frequent, please click on the 'About' tab above where you will have the opportunity to enter what we're missing. Or, simply send us an email, and we'll add it!
Shipwrecks, Dive Shops, and everything SCUBA

“A lot of people ask me if I were shipwrecked, and could only have one book, what would it be?
I always say 'How to Build a Boat.”
Stephen Wright
The Great Lakes offer a wide variety of great diving opportunities. One of the most popular, and by far the most common, are the innumerable shipwrecks hidden beneath the often turbulent surfaces of these great lakes.
Shipwrecks are a portal to the past; they give the diver an opportunity to travel back in time by simply descending to the bottom and watching this large structure come into view. I consider the most interesting wrecks to be the commercial and military ships that through no fault of their own found themselves quickly heading to the bottom of the body of water on which they were traveling, transformed into an alien structure that shouldn't be there, lying eriely quite and alone, manned only by the ghosts of its former crew and the aquatic life that happened upon this trajedy.
If wreck diving is a passion of yours, as it is mine, then you're lucky you found this site. There are literally thousands of shipwrecks littered across the bottom of the lakes, hundreds of them you can dive. Out databases have boat loads (pun intended:) of data on most of the known wrecks, those that you can dive, and those that you can't. As an added bonus, there are almost 500 dive shops and charters listed too!
SCUBA Diving in the Great Lakes

To find a shipwreck or dive site, all you need to do is use the quick search options at the top of this page or use one of the more advanced search forms such as: dive site, dive club, or charter operator/dive shop. Once you find the shipwreck, or general dive site/quarry you're interested in, you can use the Google maps interface to find a nearby dive shop or charter to contact. In addition to the Google maps, dive shops and dive charters that participate can indicate that they visit the wreck or site in question, so be sure to check the page for the shipwreck you're interested in to see if any have signed up!
If you're planning a dive trip to one of the many wrecks, then you might be interested in learning more about the ships you'll find at the bottom of the lakes. Click here.
